In Montana like most states, all non-profit organizations are required to have an annual meeting of its membership. The purpose of that meeting is to evaluate and assess the organization’s progress toward its mission, review financials, adjust strategy, and the election of its officers and board members.
As you probably already know – Montana is a big place. Organizing board or business meetings on a statewide scale can be difficult due to the logistical hurdles involved, including extensive travel requirements and associated expenses. (A shout-out to our hardworking Executive Board Members for always making difficult things work!)
In addition, we have an opportunity once a year to recognize significant contributions, whether through time, talent, or treasure (and many times, all of the above).
Hence, the creation of the Montana Council Annual Convention. A gathering place of Scouting spirit and something for every volunteer, no matter their position or status in the organization.
Friday night is all about recognizing outstanding District Performance. Setting the stage with a theme of “Casino Royale,” there will be games of chance and general merriment before recognizing veteran status and District shoutouts. Everyone in Scouting is tied to the recognition being presented on Friday night.
Saturday is a great program-focused breakfast and opening, followed by specific seminars and learning opportunities. Check out the lineup here. Truly something for everyone.
At lunch, awards are presented for the National Eagle Scout Association, the Order of the Arrow, Commissioners, the Anniversary Month Contest, the Photo Contest, the President’s Awards for Outstanding Service, and much, much more.
The afternoon focuses on a General Session where the Council Key 3 will answer questions related to where Scouting is today in our great state and more importantly, where we are headed. Following, there is an opportunity for “Fun learning.” How to make a great cup of Coffee at Camp, Advanced Dutch Oven Cooking, Using OnX maps to find the best trails and opportunities in the outdoors, and more.
The weekend highlight is the Silver Beaver Banquet where three of our super Scouters are recognized with the highest award presented by a local council. Imagine the feeling of being recognized in front of the very people who do what you do each day. It’s a special moment to say the least.
After a closing breakfast on Sunday, folks return to their home areas, recharged, and refreshed with new information on how to make Scouting better.
I’m very proud that our council makes such a big deal out of our convention. We do it for YOU, for the hardworking volunteers of the Montana Council. If you are on the fence – get off of it! – and register to attend all or parts of the 2024 Montana Council Annual Convention.
I look forward to seeing you in Missoula!
