DSE Corner: Applause For Scouters (NYLT, Wood Badge & Camps)

In somewhat typical fashion (not like last year), we find ourselves at the end of June. School is out, and summer is upon us. I have always wished we could make the summer a little longer. It always goes by in a blur.

For those of us that love Scouting in Montana, summer is a special time of year. It signals the start of training camps, summer camps and adventures. There are few places as wonderous as Montana for Scouting. We are fortunate to be surrounded by so much accessible public land and natural wonder. Despite the increase in traffic that I see daily – we do live in a special place.

I want to take a moment and recognize our NYLT Course Director Steve Dogiakos and Wood Badge Course Director Tony Pecarina and their teams for outstanding delivery. They had to remain very flexible coming out of COVID restrictions in their ability to deliver training to our youth and adults. I would ask you to join me in giving a big round of applause for these Scouters and their commitment to teaching others.

I would also like to recognize K-M Camp Director John Brault and his team for finalizing the details on what will be an amazing camp season. He, too, had the monumental task of assembling a staff during difficult times.

Lastly, to our camp rangers – Duane Hille, Nick Williams and Jim Atkinson – for keeping our facilities looking great and continually making improvements to create a better experience.

Our volunteers and staff are feeling the strain of reduced resources and are responding significantly. In true Scout-like fashion, they take on more responsibility and put their weight in the harness to help move us forward.

If you are in the audience – you too can do your part. We are nearing the finish line of our annual fundraising campaign. If you have not yet pledged your support to the Montana Council or if you find it in your heart to make a gift, please do: https://donations.scouting.org/#/council/315/appeal/3529

We can all make a difference in the life of a Scout.

Lastly, as we enjoy the warm days of summer, I would ask you all to direct some thought toward recruiting. We have so much to offer young people. It takes all of us to embrace the Spirit of Scouting with others. I encourage all of you to reach out to others and help us build our membership. The experiences that we all enjoy should be shared with the world. Do a good turn daily. It is as simple as that.

I wish you all a great summer full of adventure and look forward to seeing you on the trail.

Yours in Scouting,

Jory Dellinger
Deputy Scout Executive
