On Saturday, August 17, 2019, nearly 300 people assembled outside the new lodge and dining hall at K-M Scout Ranch. Braving the rain and fog, the crowd celebrated the official unveiling of the stunning, state-of-the-art building.
After a brief ceremony, which included comments from Scout Executive Dirk Smith and Council President Chuck Eubank, the ribbon was cut and folks entered on a red carpet into the new lodge.
For me, the event was truly emotional. It has been so amazing to watch this camp transformation over the past two years and, in all reality, over the past 30 years.
I recalled that my staff tent in 1990 sat right about what is the new kitchen. I had no idea that there was such an incredible view to be had from that spot.
Today, you can see for miles and it is truly spectacular. The fact that our board and donors believe so strongly in what Scouting does for youth is inspirational.
In addition to the new facilities, we have been working tirelessly on the camp program and staff. My hat is off to Camp Director Alex Schofield and his team. They had to work overtime to learn the new facilities and still deliver a great program.
A Summer camp is only as good as its staff.
I would also like to recognize Shon Ostler who filled in as our Ranger and kept facilities in good order.
The “game” in Scouting is changing. Baden Powell found what kids liked and wanted to do and developed curriculum and skills around that.
Today, youth are consumed with new likes and wants and Scouting is rising to meet that challenge all while still instilling the same values and leadership that it always has.
Is it different? Yes and no. The game has changed but the results are the same. The key is good facilities and good mentors!
That’s what K-M represents to me. The same skills and values, just different games.
I am in awe that we can offer these incredible facilities and without raising prices for youth to go. To date, the Council has invested nearly $16 million in infrastructure at K-M, and we are not done yet.
As of last Monday, we have started on the parade grounds and Taylor Lake. We are also significantly improving campsites. It is safe to say that we are building to meet the needs of today’s and more importantly tomorrow’s Scouts.
A special thanks to our Contractors, Architect, Project Manager, Board Members and Donors – you all put more than your fair share into this project – your belief in Scouting is heartwarming
If you didn’t get a chance to join us, let us know. The pictures are great, but you cannot understand the reality until you are standing in it. We would love to give you a tour of the new facilities. Or better yet, make sure your youth are considering K-M in their summer camp plans. Looking forward to more amazing stories from K-M.
