Program Overview

MOHAB offers two types of wilderness programs:

  • Wilderness Trekking (backpacking only)
  • Wilderness Packrafting (backpacking + packrafting)

The MOHAB program is designed to give Scouts the skills and experience necessary to lead future expeditions of their own. While at Basecamp, Scouts learn how to effectively plan and execute a wilderness trek while gaining invaluable leadership skills and safety training. Each trek is provided with trained volunteers whose primary responsibility is to offer insight into safe-decision making and effective wilderness travel. Our volunteers are not guides.

MOHAB’s Expedition Leadership curriculum includes FIVE core areas:

  1. EXPEDITION BEHAVIOR – Conflict resolution, service to the crew, loyalty, motivation, respect, honor.
  2. ORGANIZATION – Managing equipment, skill sets, taking inventory, developing and following processes.
  3. DECISION-MAKING – Tapping into the competencies of the group while evaluating environmental challenges to make good decisions as part of a sound risk-management framework.
  4. EMBRACING UNCERTAINTY – Recognizing that challenge and uncertainty are the most certain things in life! And that they should be embraced with enthusiasm and courage, and overcome with a rational approach to decision making that allows challenges to be overcome and trials to be managed appropriately.
  5. SELF-AWARENESS – The ability to take responsibility, understand assigned roles, take initiative, and recognize the important part you play as a team member.

The MOHAB Conservation curriculum focuses on THREE core areas:

  1. LEAVE NO TRACE – Practices for minimum impact wilderness travel and camping;
  2. WILD PLACES – Identify the needs for, and benefits of, preserving wilderness lands for ecosystem health and human benefit.
  3. ECOSYSTEM KNOWLEDGE – Learn the specific flora and fauna of the ecosystem of the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex, and how it relates to, and is impacted by, human activity.

MOHAB’s Wilderness Packrafting curriculum includes FIVE core areas:

  1. PACKRAFTING EQUIPMENT – How to select, use and maintain wilderness packrafting gear.
  2. PACKRAFTING SKILLS – Learn safe and effective techniques for traveling and communicating through water corridors, including lakes and rivers.
  3. RISK MANAGEMENT – The process of making safe decisions in real-time while navigating unknown rivers through river scouting and group skills assessment.
  4. NAVIGATION – Learn the process of on-water navigation quickly and accurately.
  5. PACKRAFT PLANNING – Learn how to incorporate packrafts as a tool in planning wilderness expeditions.

MOHAB’s Wilderness Trekking Training curriculum includes FIVE core areas:

  1. ULTRALIGHT BACKPACKING – The philosophy, equipment, and techniques of contemporary ultralight backpacking. We wholeheartedly adhere to the notion that we can reduce our pack weights with more knowledge, higher skills, and better planning!
  2. EXPEDITION COOKING – Learn how to prepare your own gourmet meals in the backcountry with minimal cooking equipment and lightweight ingredients.
  3. RISK MANAGEMENT – Become familiar with the process of making good decisions in the face of challenging and unpredictable circumstances that will empower you to be comfortable leading your own wilderness expedition.
  4. NAVIGATION – Learn the process of navigating quickly and accurately, both on and off-trail, in forest, river, and mountain environments.
  5. INCLEMENT CONDITIONS – Learn how to use your gear to maximum advantage, especially shelters, sleep systems, and clothing systems, for inclement mountain weather conditions.

Where is mohab

Montana Outdoor Hight Adventure Base (MOHAB) is based out of the Boone and Crockett Club’s Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Ranch (TRMR) near Dupuyer, MT. The property covers more than 6,000 acres that lie in the foothills of the east slope of the Rocky Mountains bordering the Bob Marshall Wilderness. The area is prime habitat for grizzly and black bears, bighorn sheep, Rocky Mountain goats, elk, mule deer, whitetail deer, cougar, and diverse mammals and birds. The Montana Council is thankful for the generosity of the Boone and Crockett Club for allowing access to their facility.

The Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex is more than 1.5 million acres of federally designated roadless wilderness west of TRMR, straddling the Continental Divide with elevations from 4,000 feet from the valley floors to over 9,000 feet at mountain summits.

This vast Wilderness is more than ten times larger than Philmont. The property abuts hundreds of thousands of acres of National Forest and designated Wilderness.
