DSE Corner: Happy New Year

Happy new year! Well – not quite yet, but in the next few days, we will ring in 2022.

I think, like most of you, I was highly optimistic heading into 2021. I assumed we would emerge safely from the pandemic and, most things were looking positive. As sometimes happens, things change. 2021 has been a difficult year for almost everyone. Supply chain issues, labor shortages and a general sense of gloom have filled the air.

Certainly, we are not immune to those sentiments here in the Boy Scouts of America. We, too, have plenty of challenges ahead of us. That being said, I am continually lifted by the Scouting Spirit which fills so many of you and so many of our youth.

December is an incredible time of year to see Scout Service in action – tree lots, tree recycling, food drives, food basket delivery, serving meals, clothing drives – it is happening everywhere. That is what doing a good turn daily is all about.

I can tell you that my heart is full as I read the stories of service to others. What an incredible gift – and while you may not hear every “thank you,” you should know that your communities and the people you touch are forever grateful!

I sincerely hope that your holiday season was a bright spot in an otherwise difficult year, and know that you are appreciated. In your honor, we are preparing some highlights from 2021 – look for them to be sent later this week. I hope, like me, it brings a smile to your face. We have much to be thankful for, not the least of which is you and your participation in Scouting.

Wishing you a happy, safe and healthy 2022!
