A Cubmaster’s BLAST Experience

“Any leader in Scouting would benefit from this training,” – Nick Maharrey, Cubmaster, Pack 421 Laurel, MT.

I took the Beginning Leader Accelerated Success Training with Betsy Eubanks. It was informative and it covered aspects of Scouting, from a leadership perspective, that I did not know. Any leader in Scouting would benefit from this training.

We tend to think we are on our own little island with our committee and we forget we have a big support system that goes beyond the pack level. In taking BLAST, we looked into who our District Executive, Chairman and Commissioner are. These are amazing people to get to know. They are there for our support and the training opened my eyes to that. We also covered aspects of conducting pack meetings that I had not thought of.

To me, BLAST means not to forget to have fun. Scouting is supposed to be fun! Not only for the Scouts but the leaders and parents also. Scouting is very family-oriented and everyone should have a good time.

That is how we can continue to recruit new kids. Current Scouts go to school and brag about what they did at a den or pack meeting and others are interested in joining Scouts.

I am the Cubmaster for Pack 421 in Laurel, MT., and this is the third year my son has been involved in Scouting.

If I had to pick one thing I took away from the class it is, don’t be too proud to ask for help. There are a lot of people out there to ask. The only dumb question is the one you don’t ask. The support system goes from other pack committee members all the way up to those working at the Scout store. There is plenty of information out there. All you have to do is ask.

Relying on others and making sure more people are involved is something that I learned a lot about. Taking everything on as Cubmaster is exhausting. Other committee members can also help out. They can handle things and we can work like a well-oiled machine as long as everyone is on the same page.

Thank you,

Nick Maharrey
